- Auction of telecom spectrum will be done without 5G, Airtel and Voda Idea have to renew many licenses soon
There is no aspect of human life where the coronavirus is not affected. Now 5G service will also be delayed in the country and the corona infection is also responsible. It is reported that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) of the Central Government has decided to go ahead with the process of auctioning the telecom spectrum without 5G radiowaves. Sources are quoting that the auction will begin before October this year. By May 22, the company will be selected, which will manage the auction and make software for it. Only then the auction date will be fixed. According to sources, 4 companies have been found to be qualified in the technical phase. Of these, 2 have spectrum auction experience.
If either of these two companies is selected, then the spectrum auction process will start after two months. If not, then the process will start after 3 months. It is believed that due to this, 5G service will not be available in the country for the next two years.
The DOT seeks approval of a spectrum auction process that excludes the spectrum in the 3,300–3,600 MHz band. The same radio wave spectrum is to be used for 5G. Let me tell you, the Defense Department has placed a demand for 100 MHz spectrum out of 5G radiowaves. After that, DoT has only 175 MHz of spectrum left for auction. Discussions are going on between the two ministries on this issue.
At the same time, several licenses of Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are coming for renewal. These companies will have to be involved in the bidding process to continue mobile service in the respective regions. The DoT, therefore, wants the auction process to proceed without including 5G spectrum.
According to the planning so far, 8,000 MHz spectrum is to be auctioned. It includes 700, 800, 900, 1800, 2100, 2300 and 2500 MHz spectrum bands. Their total value is around three lakh crore rupees.
